Under thirty bucks? I have no idea, I personally don’t like cheap, shitty tackle. Something by Ugly Stik perhaps, or some other model from Shakespeare.

A five-foot ultralight would be fine, as long as your line isn’t too heavy. Four-pound test would be more than enough. You’re fishing in a lake for stocked trout, right? A six-footer would good, you might even cast a little farther with it. Again, four-pound test is more than enough.

I’ve gotten trout on a twenty-four-inch “ice fishing” rod and two-pound line using a small Kastmaster.

Something by Ugly Stik. there good rods but might be more than 30 bucks. 5 foot is good size but also it is different on taller and bigger people.

The only one you going to find under $30 is a Shakespeare Microspin combo, they sale for $20 at Wal-Mart and are often on sale for $10 – $15. These are nice little ultra-lights, especially for the money. However I do agree that $30 isn’t a lot to work with…

The rod on this ultra-light combo is 4’6″, it may sound short, but works great for streams and lake fishing alike. You won’t find many (if any at all) 6′ ultra-light rods for under $30. Go with the Microspin combo, you won’t regret it.

UglyStik has no place being next to the word ultralight.

They’re garbage unless you’re going to beat someone with it….then I can see it’s value. Forego those POS’s, and move on to something a LOT better.

For that price, you’re options are limited. The Okuma Celilo and the Daiwa Spinmatic are, in my opinion, the best two you can buy. I like the spinmatic SLIGHTLY better, but that’s just because it balances out better with my $350 Daiwa Presso 2004. Odd that I would match that reel up with a $30 rod, but the colors match and after I put SiC FUJI’s on there, it’s going to be ridiculously light-tipped.

Anyway, those two SHOULD BE your only considerations. The rest of the trout sized rods aren’t even close to the feel and responsiveness of the Okuma and Daiwa offerings.

I live for ultralight tackle for any and every species I target. I fish a 2-6lb 9ft 6in custom built GLoomis for trout….and a $27.99 Daiwa Spinmatic.

Until the day comes when I can justify spending $500 on a hardly used trout rod, that Spinmatic will be used in its place.
