Trout fishing help?
edjsauce asked:
I am going trout fishing for the first time this summer (I’m usually a saltwater guy) and I was wondering if anyone had any tips to offer (you know, type of lure, etc.). I am using an ultralight shakespeare agility spinning reel and rod, and will be fishing in the yosemite backcountry, mostly in lakes at some altitude.

Thanks.
Were backpacking, so i can’t have too much weight. We already have to lug stupid 2 lb bear canisters.
oh yeah, and no live bait.

Rooster tails are some of the best lures for trout. Personally if you are going back packing I’d get a fly rod and fly fish…probably a lot of streams where you are going and fly rods are lightweight and a box of flies weighs nothing.

if i couldnt use live bait i would take rooster tails and fly spinners…maybe salmon eggs and power bait if the spinners dont work…

I would take a small variety of lures if you can. The reason for this is that what doesn’t work well in one area might work well in another. Sometimes it is a bit of trial and error.
You might also check out a bait and tackle shop in the area of where the trail head is and they might have a good idea of what the are trout biting on.

when i go trout fishing i usually use orange dough bait it comes in small jars u can get @ any walmart or baitshop they also make a pre balled up orange dough bait [less messy] i sometimes use white rubber worms u have to use a treble hook if your not fly fishing a treble hook is small & gold w/ 3 points on it. Good luck hope i helped!!!

as mentioned rooster tails are good lures, you also may want to try Zee-Rays, Super Dupers, Panther Martins, all of these have worked for me. Good Luck!
