All my spinning reels are Shimano - 4 Stradics, my Symetre and my Biomaster.

I'm not a Shimano evangelist by any means, though. I've had all 6 of these reels in for service due to various problems. When they are working properly, they are fine reels.

It may be a couple of years before I buy another spinning reel but, I will be considering Okuma and Daiwa for my next purchases.

So, how come there's no mention of Shimano? My Stradic 1000, Symetre 750, and my JDM BioMaster 1000 S are my "go-to" spinning reels for UL. Those other brands are fine equipment - no doubt. I'm not knocking any of them but, surely Shimano deserves a mention.

i recently purchased an okuma ul spinning reel and i must say, im ecstatic about it. i do most of my fishing on the dowagiac creek in southern michigan for trout, and on cristiana creek in elkhart, in. for smallmouth. both streams offer ample opportunity to land trophy sized fish, and with my little okuma, ive been able to land 5 lb. + smallies....
with no problem at all. thanks for this website....about time someone put up some serious info on ultralights!
