When it comes time to selecting which types of fly fishing flies to use, there are really only two choices that you have to make. Before you can make the final decision though, you really have to think about the species you are going to be targeting, and which type of presentation that they prefer. If they want a topwater bait, that is moving ever so slightly, like a small bug on the water, then you will have to use dry flies. However, if you are looking to get down deep to the fish, then you are going to have to use sinking, or wet flies.
Dry flies get their name, because they are so lightweight that they actually float on top of the water, keeping them dry. These are usually considered topwater poppers, chuggers, and other small insect replicas, that when they land on the water, create small twitches that drives predator fish crazy. These types of fishing flies are best used in low wind conditions, as well as low current conditions. While any angler can fish a dry fly under those types of situations, it is just a lot easier to use them on non windy, days, or when fishing slow moving currents.
Wet flies on the other hand, get down deep and in front of the fishes face. These types of flies are usually made of the same materials and wrapping as dry fishing flies, but they have weighted eyes, or lead melted around the head of the hook, to allow these type sof flies to sink. When fish are buried down deep, and you need a way to get a bait in front of their face, throwing wet flies is by far, one of the best ways to accomplish your goals. Just remember, that there is are right fly fishing flies for your application, and wrong fishing flies.
