Fly Fishing Vise

If you have been tying your own fishing flies for a while now, you will have probably already found what you’re looking for. However, if you’re a beginner fly tyer, there is a few things that you’re going to want to look for in your first vise, to ensure that you get the most use out of it.

First, you want a vise that has a rounded off tip, with a solid powder coat or paint job finish. This will keep the thread and fly tying material from getting snagged, and possibly torn on the end of the burr.

You are also going to want a vise that can rotate at ease. Being able to spin your fly on command is a great feature to have, especially when you’re tying larger, less aerodynamic flies. These are typically called rotary vises, and can completely change your fly tying experience.

The last thing that you’ll want to consider, is how much you want to spend on it. You can spend quite a bit of money on a good vise, but it just isn’t necessary. As long as you pay attention to these few things, and keep yourself within your means, budget wise, you will make a great addition to your fly tying bench.
