Catfishing In Ponds

If you haven’t given catching pond catfish a chance, you are seriously missing out on some fun. These guys don’t chase bass lures, but they will eat stuff you have around the house, and readily!
If you want to catch a pond catfish all you really have to do is throw a treble hook on whatever line you have tied onto your pole, or even a stick for that matter. Add a chunk of bread, with a piece or two of sweet corn in the middle, and you are ready to go. Throw it out into the pond, and wait. You will get a bite if there are fish there. I promise.
If you are wanting to have more fun, catching pond catfish is incredibly fun using ultralight fishing gear. I typically use a 5’6″ Pflueger light action rod, with a light action spinning reel. It will hold 100 yards of 10lb test, 2lb diameter powerpro braided line. This is plenty for catfish, and they give you a great workout without snapping the line.
My baits of choice are bread, and chicken liver. The best time to fish for them is at night, but trust me, you can catch them all day long. Make sure you take a good pair of needlenose pliers with you, once you hook them, the hooks are tough to get out of their skin. Also, don’t plan on eating the pond catfish, they aren’t the best tasting, and they suck up all the chemicals from the lawns surrounding the pond. Nasty.
